Origin:

Introduced from Europe, and now common throughout the United States.

Biology:

Annual grass weed. Seeds germinate in the fall and young plants grow slowly through the winter months, resuming rapid growth in the spring. Plants mature by early summer.

Identification:

Mature plants may reach over 2 feet tall and form small bunches. Leaves grow from the base and nodes along the stem, and are up to 1 foot long. Leaves are flat and slightly hairy. Flower heads form numerous open spikes that form as whorls at several points along the stem, and each spike has several smooth spikelets on it, with up to a dozen flowers on it.
