Origin:
Native to North America, and found widely from the east coast along the southern 2/3 of the United States to California, and south into Mexico.
Biology:
A perennial plant that reproduces from seeds, this plant can grow to 3 to 4 feet in height with extensive branching, creating a small shrub. It is a common roadside weed, and is found in most disturbed sites as well as open fields and rangeland, where it is unpalatable to grazing livestock.
Identification:
Stems are erect, stiff, and hairy, with multiple branches, especially near the top where the flower heads form in clusters. The leaves are alternate and have two forms. The basal leaves are oblong, about 3 inches long, and are on short stalks. The upper leaves are smaller, have wavy edges, and clasp the stem. The bright yellow flowers are daisy-like, with the numerous ray flowers opening wide to the sides, and having a diameter of around ¾ inch.
Characteristicts Important to Control:
Physical removal of individual plants is effective, but where infestations are extensive a systemic, non-selective herbicide will control them.
