Origin:
Native to the west coast of the United States from Oregon south to central California.
Biology:
A biennial that forms a rosette of leaves the first year and the very tall, slender stems and seed heads the second year. While not a particular problem in crops or landscape this is a common weed along roadsides and in pastures or rangeland.
Identification:
Mature plants can be 3 feet tall or higher, with several thick stems arising from the crown of the plant. The leaves are long and on short stalks, and they may be divided into several very thin segments. The leaves occur all along the stems. Flowers are tiny and inconspicuous except that they occur in great numbers along the very long upper stems. Each flower is on a short stalk and is a yellowish-green.
Characteristicts Important to Control:
Not a major problem, but physical removal of individual plants is appropriate.
