Origin:
Native to Europe, but found in many continents, including in Canada, the southern United States, and Hawaii.
Biology:
A cool season perennial that grows from a central bulb. Reproduction is from seeds and from underground bulbs. Plants can be common in open fields and wooded areas, as well as along roadsides.
Identification:
The mature plants have numerous stems arising from a central point, with stems and leaves being somewhat thickened. Leaves are elongate and narrow, with a distinctly light-colored midrib. The large, conspicuous flowers are white with 6 petals that have a green stripe along the underside. The long stamens within the flower are very long and showy.

Generally controlled with systemic herbicides that can control the underground parts of the plant.
