Origin:

Native to tropical Americas, and widespread in California.

Biology:

A perennial broadleaf weed, with spreading stems that stay low to the ground and may grow to 18 inches long. Grows in turf and landscape.

Identification:

Mature plants may spread out to 3 feet across due to spreading nature of stems. Leaves are up to 1.5 inches in diameter, shiny green and with wavy, lobed margins. Flowers are less than ½ inch wide and are dull red, 5 petals, with a darker center.

Characteristicts Important to Control:

In turf it may be effectively controlled with a systemic, selective herbicide.
