Controlling container-breeding mosquitoes
Day-biting Aedes mosquitoes can be very annoying and can spread viruses like Zika and Dengue. Female mosquitoes take a blood meal to develop eggs and reproduce. The eggs are deposited in small water holding containers in which the larvae develop. Eggs of the same batch will be distributed among several breeding sites. The main constraint to control container-breeding mosquitoes is the difficulty in targeting the multitude of larval breeding sites, mostly consisting of small man-made water containers that can be very hard to find.
 
Auto-dissemination as a solution
To target all the small mosquito breeding sites, the concept of auto-dissemination could be exploited. Auto-dissemination is based on the possibility that adult mosquitoes can spread insecticides to surrounding larval habitats, that are hard to find for pest control personnel. Pyriproxyfen is an insect growth hormone that has the potential to be used for this concept of auto-dissemination. When applied in water of a mosquito breeding container, pyriproxyfen disrupts the development of larvae into adult mosquitoes. The challenge is to contaminate the mosquitoes with enough particles of pyriproxyfen to achieve auto-dissemination. Applying pyriproxyfen as powder or liquid on a surface does not enable auto-dissemination, simply because the insecticide will not be transferred to the mosquito body in large enough quantities.
 
 
Unique particle transfer technology
To overcome the challenge of particle transfer to a mosquito body, a special technique was developed by the owners of In2Care. They found a way to give static charge to a netting by application of a special coating. Thanks to this static charge, small particles of  biocide adhere to the coated netting. These negatively charged particles can subsequently be transferred from the netting to any insect that lands on it. Flying insects get positively charged when they fly because of the friction of their wings. When a positively charged mosquito lands on the netting, the negatively charged particles jump onto the mosquito body. With this novel technique it has become possible to locally contaminate mosquitoes with high dose of biocide particles. Thus, this so-called In2Care InsecTech technology turned the concept of auto-dissemination into reality for mosquito control.
 
Let mosquitoes do the mosquito control for you
In2Care InsecTech technology is the core of the In2Care Mosquito Trap, making it an innovative and unique mosquito control tool. Adult females are attracted to the water-filled black In2Care Trap container when they are ready to lay their eggs. When a mosquito enters the trap, she lands on the statically charged netting and gets infected with biocide particles. She will lay a batch of eggs in the trap, but these will never develop into adult mosquitoes because of the pyriproxyfen. The infected adult female is allowed to fly out of the trap to continue her search for new breeding sites. However, the mosquito is now carrying the larvicide powder that she will spread to all surrounding breeding sites she visits. In this way, female mosquitoes control larval development in surrounding breeding sites up to 4300 ft2 around the In2Care Mosquito Trap.
 
The effective control of mosquito breeding sites surrounding the In2Care Trap reduces the mosquito population. Auto-dissemination of pyriproxyfen prevents the emergence of new mosquitoes from breeding sites and therefore helps to continuously and consistently control mosquitoes around your home.
