Now that spring is in full swing we are seeing several seasonal pests become active again. Early risers include some of the flying insects. However, with the warmth and moisture, we are now seeing more crawling insects. Soon after that, we will see the predators.
Each one of them has a unique biology and conditions that contribute to their survival. Those conditions, such as excess moisture, mulch next to the foundation, wood against a wall, overgrown shrubbery, or just too much clutter, need to be addressed. No matter what pesticide is used, if it does not contact the pest, your chances for control are nil.
As far as products, pyrethroids probably offer the broadest control and use patterns of the chemical tools we have. MasterLine Bifenthrin 7.9 or Talstar are excellent choices for many of these Spring pests. Other products such as Cy-Kick, Suspend or Demand offer the benefits of a pyrethroid with good residual.
Regardless of the product you choose, it is important that both a pre and post inspection be done whenever possible, not only to identify the conditions that need to be corrected and to ensure proper pest identification, but to determine how well the total control effort has been and to make necessary adjustments.
